The filter and vacuum options for the Intex pool stink. I leave the water in the pool all winter and it gets green and disgusting when I'm ready to open it up. I had two options: 1. drain all the water and start fresh. 2. Get a real filter with skimmer and vacuum to clean the existing water. I chose #2. Regular sand filters with a 1hp pump offer many advantages. I don't like to clean a cartridge filter every hour to clean on really dirty pools. Hook up a vacuum up that actually works. Put chlorine tabs in the skimmer and let them get disbursed evenly. Move some water! I bought a 1hp pump and 19" 110lb sand filter kit.

That’s a PVC BALL VALVE, not gate valve…

The aftermarket skimmer has a male end which the hose “I think 1.5 inch” fits over if that’s what you are asking.

I HAVE THE SAME SET UP WITH THE LARGE SQUARE SKIMMER ON THE SIDE THAT ORIGINALY HAD THE PUMP ON THE BOTTOM OF IT. HOW DID YOU ADAPT THE PIPE COMING FROM THE NEW SAND PUMP BACK TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SKIMMER??

I had a question about the valve in between the skimmer and pump. The reason it is there is to shut off the flow of water when I open the Pump to empty the basket catcher that is inside pump. Another advantage to regular skimmer is the vacuum adapter goes over skimmer basket so debris is quickly emptied from skimmer basket.
